Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal devices that look like screws. They’re placed in your jaw bone to act like tooth roots. Not only do they hold onto dental prosthetics like crowns and dentures, but they also maintain the strength and structure of your jaw bone. Without implants, missing teeth and roots can lead to bone loss in your jaw.

When you get dental implants at We Care Dental, the team performs an initial surgery to remove any remaining parts of the original tooth or its root. Then, they screw the metal implant into your jaw through an incision in your gum line.

Implants are made of titanium, a biocompatible metal that your bone bonds with over time. Once your bone bonds with the implant, they reopen the incision to attach a second metal component called the abutment.

Your dental prosthetic attaches to the abutment. The team takes impressions or 3D scans of your mouth with the abutment in place to create custom, permanent crowns or dentures that fit perfectly over it.

Which types of dental implants can I get?

You have two main options for dental implants at We Care Dental. The type you get depends on your needs, specifically the number of replacement teeth you need. You can get:

Single implants

Single implants support crowns. The team at We Care Dental designs a crown to look completely natural and fit perfectly over a single abutment.

Multiple implants

If you’re missing more than one tooth, the team can place multiple, evenly spaced implants in your jaw bone to support a bridge or a set of dentures. The bridge or denture set latches onto the abutments, and they generally replace more teeth than there are implants.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. They have a very high success rate, so you can expect to have your implant for the rest of your life as long as your bone heals properly around it after the initial surgery.

Just like with other prosthetics, you’ll likely need to replace the crown, bridge, or denture on your implant at some point. You can make it last as long as possible by following a strict oral hygiene routine. Just like with your natural teeth, you must clean your prosthetics well according to the instructions you get from the team at We Care Dental. You should also floss between your crown or bridge and the nearby teeth to remove bacteria and food particles from the spaces and crevices.

Finally, you must continue attending your six-month dental cleanings. The team at We Care Dental thoroughly cleans your prosthetics and can give you suggestions on how to best care for your implants and the teeth around them.
